In April next year Seaview Marina will host the Wellington Boat Show. This will be a fantastic event, for the boating community, and also the wider Hutt Valley and Wellington regions.

Alongside the boat show, the Lowry Bay Yacht Club will stage the inaugural 24-Hour Endurance Yacht Race on 8 and 9 April. This type of event has never been held before in New Zealand and has attracted many Wellington and Hutt Valley-based businesses as sponsors of the race, including Gibson Sheat. We think this is a great event - a bit daring, requiring skill and courage - and certainly a bit different from any other sporting event that we have been involved with. Our own Edward Cox will be entering, skippering his Noelex 25, as one of the smallest vessels in the race. He can’t wait: ”This will be exciting, close quarter racing, right here in the harbour.”

Skippers from around the greater Wellington region have been invited to compete in the race and there is a lot of enthusiasm and excitement out there. Yachts will sail non-stop for 24 hours on a circuit set out on Wellington Harbour. The yacht that sails the longest distance within the 24-hour period, corrected by a given handicap, (much like a handicap in golf) will take away the trophy. The handicap system ensures all competing yachts – big, small, fast, or not so fast – have an equal chance of winning the trophy.
